This autobiographical story takes the reader into the mind of the author, who is a lawyer from a well-known family from Lynn, Massachusetts in the midst of trying a murder case in the early 1970's, and the trials, tribulations and frustration, which he experiences at the hands of an insensitive judge. The author makes visits to the courthouse cafeteria, while awaiting the verdict of a man whose life is in his hands, and by means of flashbacks is attempting to understand how he got to where he is today. His reveries focus upon the problems facing a young lawyer in the 1960's from Lynn's ethnic melting pot, affectionately known as the "Brickyard", where the family chicken house was located, and who struggles to enter private practice as a solo practitioner. The author's recollections are replete with humorous anecdotal stories involving earlier cases, lawyers, judges and Damon Runyan-type clients and characters from Lynn and surrounding communities.
